About Emily
Having grown up in a family touched by disability, I am aware of the systemic challenges and inequities faced by disabled people. This personal experience, combined with my professional background and my volunteering experience, has fuelled my desire to help make a difference to the lives of disabled individuals.
My Master's Degree in Nutrition and Behaviour allowed me to explore the connection between what we eat and how we feel, which led me to work as a registered nutritionist. I ran my own nutrition clinic, helping clients make meaningful changes to their health and wellbeing.
After many years of working as a registered nutritionist, I was then drawn to addressing broader systemic issues that impact wellbeing. My background in nutrition, combined with personal experiences, led me to transition into the field of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). My experience spans both the NHS and the private sector, where I have worked to create supportive environments that empower people to live fulfilling lives.
Having witnessed first-hand the disparities in wellbeing outcomes between disabled and non-disabled people, I embarked on this Fellowship with the hope that exploring different approaches in other countries might provide valuable insights and potential solutions to improve the situation here in the UK.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed individuals can change the world. In fact, it's the only thing that ever has" - Margaret Mead
I am currently establishing the charity Mana, dedicated to supporting the wellbeing of disabled people. Recognising the gaps in support systems and the barriers many disabled individuals face, I felt driven to take meaningful action.
My aim is to build a charity that not only advocates for equity and inclusion but also actively works to improve physical, mental and social wellbeing for disabled people. From innovative programmes tailored to disabled individuals’ needs to engaging with community organisations and policymakers, Mana is designed to be a comprehensive resource for empowerment and support.
This charity will also involve collaboration with disability advocates, healthcare professionals and community leaders to ensure that every initiative we launch is impactful and relevant. At the heart of Mana is a commitment to amplifying the voices of disabled people and involving them in every step of the decision-making process, ensuring the charity truly reflects their needs and priorities.
As I establish Mana, I am learning daily about the importance of resilience, creativity and connection in the nonprofit space.
I envision Mana becoming a trusted source of support and a catalyst for change, where we not only address immediate needs but also challenge societal perceptions and advocate for long-term improvements in accessibility, inclusion and equity.
